Client's Health Objective with IThrive (How Sameer overcame insulin resistance, lost weight, and regained his overall health)

His Story

09/ 04 / 2022

Sameer Geepee was a man in his prime.

46 & based in Dubai, he earned a whole livelihood as a fitness coach. Persistently motivated in honing a better life, his workout was consistent, despite a haywire routine; with schedules always a buzz with a love for fun. And yet particularly, one day, on the 27th of November, a CGM test declares him as pre-diabetic; not being a very contemptuous or dramatic curtain fall, but rather, (even worse)—it tells him to press pause on his celebration of life.

His approach with iThrive was one sought from accountability, and coming on board was a lifestyle choice. He realized there were better decisions to take in regard to his health, and he was the one in charge of them all. With the help of iThrive, Sameer hoped to work for a cause & achieve results so excellent, he could conceive an example of the same.

Sameer’s Primary Health Issues

Constant High Blood Sugar Levels

Hyperglycemia, or high blood glucose, is a common condition in which blood glucose levels are indicated to be higher than normal. Common symptoms include urinating more often, feeling more tired or hungry, and increased weight loss. For Sameer, a habit of eating with his heart rather than his mind, and a history of him being overweight, led to a consistent insight of higher levels showcased within his blood glucose.

Low Energy Levels

Fatigue, or extreme tiredness, is a common symptom of diabetes. When cells are made to receive insufficient glucose, it can cause a delay in energy and a subsequent lowering of the same. People like Sameer suffering from obesity find it more difficult to engage in physical activity, leading to sleep disruption and an unorganized diet plan.

Dizziness or Lightheadedness while Running

Diabetes can cause blood sugar swings and dehydration - commonly leading to dizziness or feeling lightheaded. For Sameer, exercise could have caused a declining blood sugar level, especially since he hadn’t adjusted his diet or medication before.

Root Cause Analysis

Our blood is our primary biological database. iThrive’s unique RCA protocol helped Sameer to uncover some home truths he may have otherwise found difficult to swallow, & helped feed into a bigger belief that is - The correct holistic way to deal with any health issue is to uncover and address the root cause instead of covering it up.

High Uric Acid Levels

High levels of uric acid can cause a person to develop insulin resistance, which can increase their risk of developing diabetes. With a total intake of not more than 1L of water per day, Sameer’s poor intake contributed to his uric acid levels as well.

Low Vitamin D and Platelet Count

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the onset of diabetes. It thus contributes to both the initial insulin resistance and an onset of diabetes caused by β-cell death. Sameer’s insufficient exposure to sunlight, as well as the lack of supplementation, may have led to Vitamin D deficiency and subsequent elevated levels of HbA1C.

Liver Dysfunction

There is a close association between diabetes and liver disease. Higher blood sugar levels translate to higher levels of free radicals, which increases oxidative stress. Sameer's weight increase is also considered to be the cause of his liver damage since his being overweight led to additional bulk stress further leading to liver dysfunction.

Electrolyte Imbalance

Electrolyte imbalances, also known as electrolyte disorders, refer to the variations of electrolyte levels within body fluids. Very high or very low levels of electrolytes disrupt cell function, and can even lead to it turning into a life-threatening disorder. Sameer’s electrolyte imbalance had occurred due to his dehydration, a lack of mindfulness in drinking 3 liters of water or more.

Thyroid Hormone Insufficiency

Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune form of diabetes, often occurs alongside autoimmune thyroid disease. The association is even stronger if you are overweight or obese. Samir’s lifestyle and diet had led to a hormonal dysfunction, irregulating his thyroid levels and a subsequent deficiency.

iThrive's Intervention

The first intervention was to eliminate inflammatory foods from Sameer’s diet. Foods known to trigger a spike in his blood sugar levels (such as dairy or sugar) were eliminated, and replaced with a nutrient rich diet to be continuously monitored alongside his blood sugar.

Supplementation and Targeted Support

In order to address Sameer’s nutritional deficiencies & support his overall digestive health, iThrive developed a customized supplementation regimen. Supplements such as Berberine helped improve his blood sugar levels, while N acetyl L cysteine (NAC) helped maintain his elevated liver enzymes. Magnesium helped him in correcting his deficiency and fighting his cravings for dessert, whereas the B-complex energized the body and empowered better body functioning. Zinc and Krill Oil supplements enhanced omega-3 storage, and improved the overall health of his skin as well. Although followed with a varying consistency, Sameer’s supplementation not only filled in a metaphorical blank, but also ensured a profound change in him as an overall health beneficiary.

What are the suggestive approaches for Client's conditions

First Month

In the first month, we focused on identifying the trigger factors and providing a regulatory solution for the same. Sameer was asked to purchase a Continuous Glucose Monitoring device, through which we could understand the patterning of his blood, as well as any trigger factors causing the spike. Following his blood tests, he was diagnosed with hyperinsulinemia / hyperglycemia, with an HbA1c level of 7.2. We made an effort to change his pre and post run meal schedule, due to him feeling dizzy as he ran empty stomach. Sameer was introduced to one-pot meals, providing him a more efficient way of acquiring nutrients; in spite of a bustling workweek accredit to his career as a lifestyle coach. Although not initially keen on adding his details to his tracker, we were able to share a common medium via WhatsApp, through which he could provide us with his energy levels and meal details - and assist us in the analysis of the same. Within a span of 15 days, he was able to shed a total of 1.5 kg, and report to us saying that his energy levels are arguably better than before.

Second Month

By the second month, he started his routine of supplements but never seemed to be consistent with it. We recommended berberine (controls blood sugar levels) and NAC (to improve his liver functioning), along with some essential supplements such as magnesium. We even shared some common methods for its intake (the addition of lemon to magnesium water) for the avoidance of any prolonged discomfort. His voyage to London without his CGM made it difficult to track his glucose levels, but with his running schedule intact, he was able to shed excess weight. Sameer lost a total of 6.5 kg by the end of his second month with us, and felt a giddy pleasure while buying clothes of size M, rather than his usual L or XL.

third Month

At the beginning of the third month, Sameer started to experience remarkable improvements. His energy levels and sleep cycle had improved with time, and with the testing of his glucose alongside family in Qatar, he was able to display a laudable 102 mg/dl reading (previously read as 120 mg/dl) He did not wish to go ahead with the detox cycle as he decided to do it himself, after completing his rounds with his supplements

Lifestyle and Ongoing Support

With no restrictions to his free-bird lifestyle, and a pair of new wings clipped on to fly, Sameer found a new sanctity to his industrious work life and a stable regulation of his blood sugar levels. He has now achieved a commendable loss of 6.5 kg within just a span of 2 short months, and loves how his shoulders feel lighter everyday. Regular follow-ups and continuous support from iThrive have helped him merit a better cause, and set an example for the rest of mankind itself.
