Eczema formally known as Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by a compromised skin barrier, immune dysregulation, and heightened sensitivity to environmental and dietary triggers. It is not simply dry skin. It is not a hygiene problem. And it is not a skin condition that happens in isolation. Eczema is the skin's visible expression of a systemic immune and gut dysfunction that involves the skin barrier, the gut microbiome, the immune system, and the nervous system simultaneously. The itch-scratch cycle that characterises eczema is real and debilitating but the skin is not where the condition originates. It is where it expresses itself.
