Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system sends faulty signals that dramatically accelerate the skin cell cycle. Normal skin cells complete their growth cycle in about a month. In psoriasis this cycle is compressed to three to four days, cells accumulate on the surface faster than they can be shed, forming the characteristic thick, scaly plaques. Psoriasis is not a skin hygiene problem, an allergy, or a cosmetic condition. It is an immune-driven inflammatory condition that happens to express itself on the skin. The skin is the visible signal. The immune dysregulation driving it is systemic which is why psoriasis is associated with significantly elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriatic arthritis.
