Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow back up into the oesophagus, the tube connecting the mouth to the stomachstomach. When this happens frequently it becomes Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD. The conventional explanation is that the stomach produces too much acid. This is almost always incorrect. In most cases the problem is not the amount of acid but the failure of the lower oesophageal sphincter, the valve between the oesophagus and stomach to close properly.
